DE BREEDE SMAL, RAWSONVILLE
MARCH 2021

5 - 7 MARCH 2021

After not having an Outspan since November last year due to Covid, we were all looking forward to getting out into nature and seeing each other again. This campsite was the ideal place to pick up where we left off last year. To just relax and charge our battery’s, was just the break we all needed

OUTSPAN SYNOPSIS

We entered the farm and then went onto a long sandy road between the vineyards, passing tractors drawing trailers filled with grapes, just picked, and taking them to the press which was parked near the office. We watched the grapes going into the press and the juice being extracted below. You know you are on a farm in the Winelands in the middle of the harvesting season. It was a hive of activity. Once past the vineyards the road opens to the large patch of lawn with trees on the one side and the river on the other. The ablutions were clean and toilet paper, sanitizer and hand soap supplied. The power boxes are set up high on poles.

The Watkyns’, van der Sluys’, Nigel and Wayne were already there, parked on the bank of the Breede River. We parked in line on the river bank. Websters’ soon joined us and thereafter the Honing’s and Adendorffs’. All in a line with the perfect view of the river. It was a hot day and after much sweating to set up camp, we sat down to some cold drinks and watched the fish jumping and landing with a splash. Everyone was on the lookout for the crockodiles that had escaped near Bonnievale about 100km away, but none were spotted.

As Johanna put it: by the time the crockodiles have passed all the campsites around Robertson, on their way to Rawsonville , they should be pretty full so they won’t be interested in eating us.
The braai fires were lit and we chatted into the night, catching up on all the news. It turned quite chilly later on forcing us into our van’s and beds for some warmth .

On Saturday morning the wind was blowing in the opposite direction to the breeze of Friday. The grass was very wet from the overnight dew. Soon the sun and wind dried the grass. Some ventured off to recce new campsites in the area, others stayed and enjoyed the peacefulness of the campsite, river and birds.

In the afternoon, those that had had birthdays in January and February laid on some snacks. We all
gathered at Mark and Johanna’s van. We then heard the feedback on the recce of campsites in the area.
Apparently one of the camps had a nudist group camping there. Nigel made such a quick u turn that not
much could be told about the campsite, but a bit more was said of the campers
The wind had subsided by the evening and once again the braai fires were lit and more “kuiering’ for the
evening.

Sunday morning was the perfect day. It always is when you have to pack up.
First it was time for Indaba. After that we still sat around chatting and slowly packed up and left
All in all a lovely weekend in a beautiful setting.

Please remember to advise Bev of numbers for attending the outspans as requested in the Minutes
See you all at Fish Eagle in April for the AGM.
Yours in camping
Brenda
